The Black Arm Band first came together in 2006 to perform murundak ('alive' - Woiwurrung ), a powerful event celebrating music as an instrument of identity, resistance and freedom. Against a backdrop of lyrical and provocative film sequences created by Daybreak Films, this Black Arm Band features a 'super-band' of Australian indigenous artists and was the winner of the 2007 Helpmann Award for Best Contemporary Music Concert.
Performances of the Black Arm Band have included Womadelaide, the Sydney Arts Festival, London LIFT Festival and Melbourne Arts Festival.
As well as generating the vibrant and powerful film backgrounds for the live performances of the Black Arm Band, Daybreak Films have also been commissioned by Arts House and Black Arm Band to film an ongoing concert archive of all performances. The Black Arm Band is also the subject of Daybreak Films’ feature documentary project Murundak: Songs of Freedom.
